Der Swan Song ist die Geschichte zweier benachbarter, aber verfeindeter Wahlfamilien, die die gleichen ökonomischen Kämpfe ausfechten.
Auf der einen Seite der Strasse befindet sich die Bar. Sie war zuerst da. Das straffe Regiment führt Tante Auguste. An ihrer Seite: die langjährige Freundin Poppy, aktiv in der lokalen Mieter_innenbewegung. Die Bar wird von den immer strengeren Auflagen der Ämter bedroht. Tantes Neffe Florian und seine Freund_innen Hilaria und Sylvan versuchen, die Bar an die Entwicklungen anzupassen. Hilaria, eine Weltenbummlerin und Botanikerin, ist der Romeo in unserer Geschichte.
Auf der anderen Seite der Straße hat sich ebenfalls vor Jahrzehnten eine kleine, selbstorganisierte Galerie niedergelassen, geführt wird sie von Patience, einer überzeugten Feministin. Ihre Freundin Diana unterstützt sie. Patience hat einige Künstler_innengenerationen aufwachsen, blühen und gehen sehen: Die künstlerischen Extreme werden verkörpert von Hobbes, dem Aquarellmaler und Melanie, der jungen Soundartkünstlerin. Hannah, unsere Julia, ist ebenfalls Mitglied der Galeriefamilie, sie ist akribische Lektorin und vorerst noch mit ihrer Jugendliebe Heschel, einem Anwalt, verheiratet.
Die Strukturveränderungen in der Nachbarschaft werden durchgesetzt von Toto, einem peniblen Bürokraten und Botschafter der Aufwertung durch ein nachbarschaftsübergreifendes, kommerzielles Strassentheaterfestival. Das alles stürzt beide Familien in weit verzweigte Konflikte, während in Hilaria und Hannah eine Liebe wächst, die alte Verbindungen auflöst und neue keimen lässt.

English Synopsis

The Swan Song Operetta tells the story of two families not connected by blood.

The bar family is ferociously presided over by TANTE AUGUSTE and Poppy who spend their free time with Renter’s Right’s Association fighting against gentrification and renovations. They are flanked by Tante’s nephew Florian, the best bartender and amateur historian of the neighborhood. Helping him is Sylvan, forever young and blinded by the ladies and his bad eyesight, and their best friend and world traveller; Hilaria, whose love of botany competes with her budding love for Hannah. Hannah is a copyeditor and loyal friend of the Gallery family married to her best friend from school, Heschel, the lawyer who quickly takes over Tante’s case against the city’s demand for renovation or imminent eviction, while secretly falling for Sylvan.

Across the street is the Gallery family, headed by Patience, an old fashioned feminist and supporter of local artists, running the gallery with her best friend Diana and Diana’s two kids. Diana keeps the business of managing the gallery alive through constant anxiety and meddling in other people’s lives. Hobbes the landscape painter has been hanging his work at the gallery for years and is very unhappy with the new artist Melanie, who recently graduated and moved to the neighborhood and is trying to take over his beat* with her beats and contemporary sound installations.

Hanging over all of their heads is Toto the Burgeramt pencil-pusher who’s keen on dragging their businesses and the neighborhood into the 21st century with a huge blowout arts festival, renovations, a park/living development due for construction right in their backyard and the higher rents that come with it.

Jacques and Gilles are the last generation of artists who, after having moved onwards and upwards in the art world, have returned to celebrate their success authentically by having their wedding in the neighborhood square.

The questions remain: Will Hannah divorce Heschel after years of unconsummated love? Will Hilaria finally settle down? Will Tante lose the bar? Will Sylvan ever grow up? Will the gallery move on with the times or hold back and become irrelevant? Will Hannah and Hilaria finally fall for each other?  Will everything change, or can our heroes hold back the tide and keep things as they were … back in the good old days?
